History buffs will find so much to see, several vacations might be in order! If you begin on the Seacoast, consider visiting Fort Constitution in New Castle, where the first aggressive act of the Revolution took place, or the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion just outside of Portsmouth. The mansion was originally the home of New Hampshire's Royal Governor. Take a walking tour of Portsmouth and visit the many colonial era homes.
From there, take Route 4-called "Antique Alley" for the many antique shops on its length-to Concord for a stop at the Museum of New Hampshire History; you can see it, along with a visit to the State House, comfortably in less than a day.
Go west to Wilton to Frye's Measure Mill, then to Hillsborough to visit the Franklin Pierce Homestead, home of the 14th U.S. President. Turn northward to Charlestown and the Fort at No. 4 for a fascinating look at colonial history. If time allows, a visit to Mariposa Museum, Strawbery Banke, Canterbury Shaker Village, the Daniel Webster Birthplace, the Enfield Shaker Village and Grist Mill are well worth the trip.
Northern Forest Heritage Park in Berlin, is the nation's leading "living history"; museum celebrating the heritage of the region's forests and mills, and the many immigrant cultures which made them thrive.
For insights into one of the most critical times in the twentieth century,
take in Wolfeboro's Wright Museum. If it's natural history that fascinates you,
don't miss America's Stonehenge, Chesterfield Gorge, The Flume and Lost River.
