Join us on the 29th of January for a winter hike to the gateway of the wilderness - the summit of Mount Israel. This 4.2 mile hike involves a moderate ascent through the diverse mountainside forests and rewards participants with a sweeping panoramic view of the White Mountains. Hot beverages will be provided at the summit, making lunch among the rocky outcroppings and evergreens all the more welcoming and the winter weather less formidable. After the drinks have been finished and the snacks polished off, we will descend via the same trail, which grants views to the south of the lakes region.
What to Bring:
Participants should bring extra layers that can be taken off/added on to stay warm and dry, rain/snow gear, a hat, an extra pair of socks, any sort of medication you may need, hiking boots, hiking poles (optional), snowshoes or microspikes (dependent on conditions), lunch, snacks, plenty of water, and your own tea/drink mix (optional, we will provide some for all). The SLA can provide snowshoes for up to six participants should they be necessary.
Audience:
All ages capable of hiking 4.2 miles of moderate intensity in snow/icy conditions. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Hi my name is Nick Langlois, and I’m from Marysville Ohio. Last spring I graduated from Otterbein University, and shortly thereafter joined the Lakes Region Conservation Corps to get my boots muddy in New Hampshire forests. This past summer I served with the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, exposing me to the intricacies of trail maintenance and the best parts of land management. My time in school and the outdoors has fueled my passion for conservation and cool insects; I am super excited to join SLA for the season. Cooking, reading, climbing and hiking are my favorite hobbies!
Hello! My name is Grace Callahan and I’m from Alexandria, Virginia. I graduated from Dartmouth College in 2019 where I studied ecology and earth sciences. Flipping logs to find slugs, centipedes, and salamanders in the woods behind my house was an important part of growing up for me. I’m passionate about helping people explore and connect with their backyards like I was fortunate enough to do, and this means protecting natural backyard spaces! I hope to work to preserve clean rivers, lakes, and forests for generations to come. I grew up visiting Squam and Winnipesaukee during summer vacations and I’m so excited to live here for a year! I love learning new things and right now I’m trying to teach myself more butterfly/moth ID, how to sew simple stuffed animals and clothes, and how to make good rice.
