Overview

Charlie Ballantine, named one of the top 200 living guitarists by All About Jazz, is recognized for his versatility and intricate playing. Jazz Times Magazine praises his ‘maniacal precision,’ while Vintage Guitar Magazine highlights his unique blend of jazz, rock, and folk. Ballantine’s original compositions, including albums like Vonnegut and Cold Coffee, reflect his deep respect for jazz tradition, with renditions of standards and a 2021 double album dedicated to Thelonious Monk. His playing, influenced by guitarists like John Scofield and Bill Frisell, mixes jazz improvisation with rock roots. After studying at the Jacobs School of Music, Ballantine gained recognition with his album Life is Brief: The Music of Bob Dylan, which was named a top 10 jazz album by All About Jazz. A prominent performer at festivals and clubs, he has also collaborated with artists like Nicole Henry, Emmett Cohen, and Dave King.
